Still Life

Still Life" unfolds the narrative of an elderly man in a care facility who finds solace and a renewed sense
of self through art therapy, amidst the struggles of aging and mental health issues.

"Still Life" showcases the protagonist's journey with a mental health disorder, hinting at schizophrenia, and how art becomes a pivotal part of his therapy. Art therapy, according to the American Art Therapy Association, provides a creative outlet for expression and communication, which can be particularly beneficial for those who find verbal communication challenging. For individuals with schizophrenia, engaging in painting or sculpting can act as a significant calming and focusing activity, aiding in symptom management.

Efficacy of Art Therapy
The benefits of art therapy extend beyond schizophrenia to a wide range of mental health conditions. For Alzheimer's patients, the Alzheimer's Association advocates for creative arts as a means to engage and stimulate cognitive functions, enhancing well-being and life quality. Programs like "Artful Expressions," designed specifically for dementia patients, emphasize the role of visual and performing arts in promoting cognitive engagement and emotional expression. Moreover, music therapy has proven effective in alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety in the elderly, with the American Music Therapy Association reporting improvements in mood and cognitive function among participants in music therapy programs. Group activities, such as choir singing, have been shown to reduce feelings of loneliness and increase a sense of community and belonging.

This short film addresses a critical yet often neglected issue—the mental health of the elderly and the therapeutic efficacy of art. It aims to underscore the urgency of integrating art therapy into elderly care, drawing from insights and recommendations from reputable health organizations.
